The most expensive part of your set-up should be the thermostat...that can run $100 and up. The entire rest of it can be done for under $30 if you use a tub, wire your own flexwatt, and don't buy the silly expensive hides.
Balls require three things:
A temperature gradient ranging from 82-92 F
50% humidity (60% when shedding)
Security, security, security.
If you want to know about the set-ups, I'd be happy to give you more details. I love these little guys...they are just so addictive. I started with one and now have nearly two dozen.

Do you want a pretty decorative animal to look at?
Do you want an animal that will be active and interesting during the day?
Do you want a snake you can walk around the house with, draping it around your shoulders?
Do you want to be able to handle it daily, or would you rather just observe it?
What size snake are you comfortable handling?
Do you have a source for prey animals in your area?
Do you have a vet local to you who is experienced in the care of reptiles?
I ask because what ball pythons want often conflicts with what first time snake owners want. If you clarify what you want to get out of your pet, it will help you find the right pet for your needs.

I do have an amphibian though!! His name is Nighteyes and he is an Albino/Golden African Clawed Frog. He is my 3rd ACF and the only one alive.. :P The other two were females and both ended up committing suicide by leaping out of their tanks.. Although, Nighteyes leapt out of the tank but that was only because Kisa bit his arm off. -__-' and yes I do have a cover..
Pics: Here's Nighteyes, Cleopatra (deceased) and Kisa (also deceased, she died after leaping out of the tank chasing Nighteyes..)
Nighteyes before the accident and then one of Nighteyes after the incident. :P It looks MUCH better. And actually if you search YouTube for 'African Clawed Frog Croaking' there's a video of Nighteyes singing, it shows his lack of arm better.

JessCurious gave you some great questions to think over. Myself I love the BP because to me it's a nice size and it moves slowly, it's not a racey snake. One of their biggest drawbacks generally is the fact that some can be picky eaters and some do little mini hunger strikes which can drive you crazy with worry until they start eating again. :russian_roulette: They come in many beautiful colors and patterns, but I still like the more natural and common markings.
Another thing I would add to the list is how much are you wanting to spend? Not just the cost of the snake, but the equipment and even the food to feed it. Perhaps even looking at your feelings at to what the snake's food preference might be. Many people have difficulty feeding an animal to a snake (like mice, rats, or rabbits), but are fine with insects and fish.
P.S. Another word of warning about reptiles...they are like Lay's potato chips...you can't have just one.
