There are many health issues that still confuse us, even with domesticated animals.
All I can think of is that it's done for trace minerals.

being a Mare & Cow Urine drinker :D I may be able to share some light on this. Apart from the nice taste fo course, and it's very addictive, it ..
Also Contains so Called:
NPN - Non-Protein Nitrogens which may be the reason they drink it. Cows are a species that can make use of NPN's in form of nutrition due to their bodily layout.

Nothing more erotic to me than fresh mare urine. Whether she's in season or not. Of course, when she's in season, I practically lose all inhibitions and become nothing more than a stud with something to prove. :)

The simplest answer of all, of course, is "maybe they were just thirsty"? Animals drink urine (humans included, until we became "sophisticated") because their bodies are lacking certain minerals, proteins or enzymes. :o I would offer that animals are "hardwired" to understand this lack of nutrients, and also they understand a readily available source, for the same. Some pregnant human females get "obsessed" with a need to consume dirt, or clay. Their bodies are sending a message. Cows gotta be smarter, they got two more teats!!!! heheheh :P

This may just be a lack of common old salt -- in some parts where salt is known to be lacking animals have been seen drinking/licking urine -- even human pee.
